Best Coaches List

So a little while back I asked you the readers for your input as to who some of the best coaches were in Wellesley at any level of sports and the response was tremendous. Below you will find the accounts from the readers who commented on their chosen coaches. Note: the readers name is to the left of the semicolon and the coach and description is to the right. If anyone else has a coach they feel should be added to the list feel free to comment.

Thom Mahoney: Ed Tuohey, who was a guidance counselor at the high school, was the swim coach and certainly made it memorable. He was very passionate about getting every person involved, building a great sense of team, and winning. We were Bay State Champions my senior year, and maybe for all three of my high school years. He tried to make us visible in the school community, requiring team members to wear a jacket and tie on meet days. He let every team member know that they were important and that he believed in each person and in the value and power of being a team.

Eliot Powell: Mr. Copeland, BAYS Soccer, Bob Campana, wrestling; Miles Page welcomed Ray and I into Pop Warner when we moved to Wellesley in ’67. Ray then played Tornadoes. I didn’t know his background. Respect, then and, perhaps, more so now.

Stephen Gill: Miles Page–did it all–Football, Hockey and Legion Baseball–had the honor of having this man coach me at the pee wee and Pop Warner level in football–a true giant to two generations of Wellesley kids!

John McDermott: Miles Page WAS youth sports in Wellesley. He helped teach me to skate at St. Moritz, helped teach me to pitch in little league baseball, and helped half the boys in Wellesley learn what teamwork and sportsmanship were all about. Miles C. Page was also a survivor of Normandy, a true Veteran of a Foreign War, a proud public servant, and one of the kindest and most generous men you’ll ever meet.

Terrance Michael Sullivan: Miles page started pop warner and brought legion baseball to Wellesley .i played on the Bears and then moved on to the tornadoes football teams my two older brothers played legion ball and we traveled all through newengland to watch them .miles page and dick Perkins taught me how to play football

Thomas Olafur Hodgson: Merrill Bergstrom was able to reach both the elite high school athletes and the shy, struggling elementary school students for whom he was their physical education teacher. Mr. Bergstrom was a truly kind and highly respected coach and educator, who made an immeasurable contribution to the Wellesley School System.

Shawn Whalen: Wrestling Coach Paul Donovan from 1976-? Numerous undefeated seasons and individual State champions. Coach Will St Cyr, Cross country 1965-1985? , and Track 1965-1975 !

Peter Santo: Mike sabin

Susan Woodworth Scheinman: High school:coach heller- loved him in soccer/softball. But best coach ever to coach and life skills Bob Stoddard- if it wasn’t for him. I don’t know where I would be- all his yrs of coaching advise. Helped me get through life challenges and then motherhood- can’t thank him enough!

Thomas McGrath: Coach St Cyr…ACES!

Karen DeMarco: I’d nominate Dick Heller greatest varsity woman’s soccer and softball coach. Outstanding in knowledge, skill, teaching, etiquette.

Dave Howard: Bobby ‪Campana wrestling coach and life coach-the best role model.

Eugene Rooney: The athletic department was outstanding. The gym show was fantastic, coaches and student participants.

Dana Mahoney: John McConchie coached the Orioles of the East Majors. One of the most outstanding people I had the pleasure of knowing and playing for! He was a town treasure and greatly loved and respected by all

Bruce Peck:  Coach Campana wrestling

Louie Mahoney Cohn: Betty Catinella! She taught me so much about swimming and life.

Bob Doherty: Paul Donavan wrestling

CGWoo224: John Gautschi – Girls Tennis

Chris DeBethune: Mike Maestro
