Soccer Preview

So today we begin our look ahead to the 2016 fall season with a brief look at both the boys and girls soccer programs who both are coming off tournament appearances in 2015. The boys are coming off an extremely successful campaign which saw them go 11-6-3, and make quite the run through the D1 South tournament including a semifinal win over the defending state champion Needham Rockets. Even though the boys saw their run come to an end in the D1 South finals vs. Brockton they have a lot of positive momentum heading into the new season, as they look to once again compete for a Herget Division title.

Meanwhile the girls soccer team also gained a postseason berth in 2015 finishing with an overall record of 6-6-7. The girls unfortunately saw their 2015 season end abruptly with a preliminary round loss to Taunton. Despite that the girls showed a lot of grit and determination all season long and with a solid core returning this team has reason to be optimistic as they seek the Herget crown!

Another Raider Pride Perspective

Last week I mentioned how I was still accepting submissions for the question “What does Raider Pride mean to you?” Today we have a submission from Kyle Souza (08). Kyle played 4 years of football at WHS and was a member of the track and field team. Here’s what he had to say!

The first year I joined the Wellesley Raiders was during my freshman year of high school, as it was my first respective seasons of football and track and field. At first being a Raider meant nothing to me, as I had lived in Wellesley for only about a year so far. As my career in football and track and field went on through senior year of high school, however, I truly understood the impact that everyone on both teams had on me, as it was a truly amazing experience being part of something greater than I had previously understood. To me, being a Raider wasn’t just joining a sports team, it was being a member of a family that had fun and worked hard together. I had learned many life lessons through being with my track and football families, and each day of practice meant a day to enjoy what we were doing while doing our best and supporting each other as a team. When it came time for games/meets, like any team, we experienced our epic wins and our heartbreaking losses.

Fall Previews Reminder

It’s that time of year again as August is coming to a close and we are getting ready for a new season of high school athletics as across the state practices have kicked off! Wellesley Sports Blitz will be rolling our fall previews all week long as we look ahead to an exciting 2016-17 school year and season!

Raider Friday Trivia Answer

So yesterday I strayed away from the youth and high school related trivia questions and into the collegiate category. The answer to the question of what Wellesley based college made the final four for mens basketball was… Babson! The Beavers marched through the sectional rounds of the NCAA D3 Mens tournament, all played on their home court on their way to a final four appearance in Salem, Virginia. Ultimately the Beavers run ended in the national semifinals, but the memories of that tournament run will live on! Congratulations to our trivia winner this week Peter Santo who receives the last Dunkin gift card (at least for now)!

End Of The Line (Game 3 Recap)

We’ve all heard the addage all good things must come to an end, and unfortunately for Wellesley South that came true today in the New England Regional semifinals. Needing just one win to advance to the regional championship game, and trying to bounce back from a heartbreaking loss Wednesday, South fell behind early and unfortunately this time could not recover as they fell to Fairfield, Connecticut 11-0 in 5 innings. Fairfield now moves on to the regional title game tomorrow to take on Warwick, Rhode Island. Despite the loss Wellesley South has a lot to be proud of as they became just the second Wellesley team to make it to regionals and continued quite a successful run for District 10 at both the sectional and state levels as the district 10 champion won section 3 for the 9th consecutive year and the state championship for the second consecutive year, 4th in the last 5 years (Newton Southeast and Wellesley South). Throughout it all Wellesley South represented the town, the district, the section, and then the state to the best of their ability and played the game the right way, and even when the going got tough, they never gave up. We at Wellesley Sports Blitz would like to congratulate South on an amazing tournament run as they gave themselves and the town memories that will last a lifetime!

Wellesley’s Friday Opponent Set

Looking to bounce back from a tough loss last night vs. Rhode Island Wellesley South will face a tough test as they will face off with Fairfield, Connecticut tomorrow in an elimination game. Fairfield defeated Bedford, NH today 17-11 to advance to face South. The game time is 1 pm from Bristol and will be televised on ESPN! The winner will move on to the championship game Saturday against Rhode Island.
