Raider Friday Trivia

It’s another beautiful Friday morning here in mid-March and that means it’s time for another installment of Raider Friday Trivia. No prize this week, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get your answers in anyway! Today’s question is… what year did the Wellesley CYO/Youth Basketball program change to solely in-town teams? Answer tomorrow!

Meanwhile for the girls they also enjoyed a 5-1 regular season record before moving on to capture the D2 State Championship! Please join us tomorrow as we will take a look back at our final team of the winter season, the wrestling team!

Boys Swimming And Gymnastics Seasons in Review

Happy hump day everyone and hope my local readers enjoyed being back at school or work after yesterday’s storm. Today we take a look back at the Boys Swimming and Gymnastics seasons who both looked to continue their success from 2015-16, into 2016-17. The boys swim team enjoyed a tremendously successful season as they finished 11-2 on the regular season, then finished 2nd at the Bay State championships, before finishing 8th at the all state meet. Gymnastics meanwhile finished their regular season at 3-6 and would go onto compete at the Bay State Conference championships. Tomorrow as we continue our look back we will take a look at the indoor track teams!

Hockey Season In Review

Today we continue our look back at the 2016-17 winter sports season by looking at the boys and girls ice hockey teams, who much like their basketball counterparts both earned berths into postseason play this season. The girls hockey team captured yet another Herget division title finishing the regular season 13-4-3 and earning the 10 seed in the D2 bracket. After beating Stoneham in the preliminary round the girls saw their season come to an abrupt and heartbreaking end as they fell 2-1 to Westwood in overtime in the first round. The boys team had another successful season as well finishing the regular season 14-5-1 and earning the 2 seed in D1 South. After handling rival Natick 5-1 in the quarterfinals, the boys came up against another Bay State Conference foe Braintree, and unfortunately came out on the wrong end of a 1-0 game in the sectional semifinal clash. Stay tuned tomorrow where we will recap boys swimming and gymnastics.

Basketball Season In Review

Today we begin our look back at the 2016-17 winter sports season by taking a look at both the boys and girls basketball teams who both made it into the state tournament. The boys finished their regular season 11-11 and earned the 15th seed in the D1 South bracket. Unfortunately the boys season came to a quick end as they fell to Marshfield at home in the preliminary round. Meanwhile the girls team had a bit more success, finishing the regular season 17-3 to earn a Herget division title and the 4 seed in the sectional. The girls posted a home quarterfinal win over Marshfield before seeing their season come to an end in the sectional semifinals with a loss to top seeded Mansfield. Keep an eye out to the blog tomorrow as we will continue our season in review with both hockey teams!

Monday Poll

It’s another chilly New England Monday and that means it’s time for another installment of Monday Poll. Last week’s poll asked which Boston area pro sports team you the reader like best, and it was a close vote but out of 16 votes cast the Patriots grabbed the top spot. This week’s poll is a bit more Wellesley related, which high school gym do you like better, the old Larssen Gym or the current high school gym? Comment with your answers!

Raider Friday Trivia Answer (Plus Babson Update)

It’s a cold Saturday but that means it’s a perfect time for the answer to yesterday’s Raider Friday Trivia question. First however congratulations to the Babson mens basketball teams who with a victory tonight over Keene State earned their second trip to the Final Four in the last 3 years. The Final Four will be played in Salem, Virginia next weekend. Now for the answer to yesterday’s trivia question! The opponent for boys hockey in their 2008 sectional semifinal was… Falmouth who the Raiders defeated 7-4, which coincidentally enough is the last time they won a game at the Gallo Ice Arena in Bourne.

Babson Hoops Advances To Elite 8

For the second time in three years the Wellesley based Babson College mens basketball team has advanced all the way to the Elite 8 of the NCAA Division III tournament and in both cases have done so on their home floor. After making it back in 2015 and then advancing onto the Final Four, the Beavers have a chance to do it again following an 87-80 Sweet 16 victory tonight over Tufts, which followed first and second round victories last weekend over Husson and Skidmore respectively. The Beavers will take on Keene State tomorrow night at 7 pm at their home gym Staake Gymnasium.
