Raider Recap 12-9-17 (Plus Trivia Answer)

The winter regular season officially has begun and it certainly looks and feels like winter. Today the wrestling team kicked off the regular season schedule as they headed to Triton for a opening match that involved Triton, Belmont, Wakefield, and Essex Tech. Could the Raiders come out of the gates strong, we’ll find out but first here’s the answer to yesterday’s trivia question. Coach Magpiong joined the Wellesley basketball program in… 2004 as a boys assistant coach under then head coach Luke Day. Now onto the recap!

Results for 12-9-17

Wrestling: Triton 42 Wellesley 27, Wellesley 50 Belmont 24, Wellesley 54 Essex Tech 24, Wakefield 41 Wellesley 24

Wrestling And Gymnastics Previews

As we wrap up the winter sports previews, with just days to go before the regular season schedule kicks off, it’s time to take a look at wrestling and gymnastics, who both had difficult seasons in 2016-17 but both have high expectations for the new year. Wrestling finished finished off last season 5-6-1 and sent Josh Cohen (18) to the all state meet. With Cohen returning this season among others look for the Raiders to make a push towards finally finishing above 500 and take a shot at the top of the Bay State Conference. Gymnastics meanwhile finished last year 3-6 prior to competition at the Bay State championships. Despite a tough season a year ago, the team returns a solid core of talent and has always been a contender for the top spot in the Bay State league, and look for it to be no different this coming season.

Raider Friday Trivia

The weather is certainly feeling like December and snow is in the forecast as we begin another Friday! Time to warm up a bit with another red hot edition of Raider Friday Trivia. Today’s question is… what year did current head girls basketball coach Glen Magpiong join the Raider basketball program? Answer tomorrow!

Boys Swimming Preview

On this second to last day of winter sports previews, we take a look at the boys swim team who is looking for more success in the new year. The boys finished last year 11-2, before finishing second at the conference meet, and 8th at the state meet. The boys are always favorites in terms of Bay State Conference play and things should be no different in 2017-18. Also look for the boys to strive for a higher finish at the state level. Tomorrow we will round out our winter sports previews with wrestling and gymnastics!

Indoor Track Previews

On this hump day morning, we continue our preview of the 2017-18 winter season by taking a look at the boys and girls indoor track teams. For the girls last season was a banner year as after a 5-1 regular season, the girls went on to claim the D2 state championship. This year with always a loaded lineup, look for the team to make another strong run at defending their title. Meanwhile for the boys they also finished last regular season 5-1 before finishing 6th at the state meet. The boys also year in and year out have a solid core, and it’s no different this year as they will certainly be a team to watch out for in both the Bay State Conference and division 2. Stay tuned tomorrow as we’ll preview the boys swimming team!

Hockey Previews

It’s day 2 of our winter sports preview week, and today we take a look at both the boys and girls hockey teams, who like their basketball counterparts are both coming off tournament appearances last season. The boys ended last year with a 15-6-1 overall record, good for second place in the Herget and the 2 seed in D1 South, where after beating Natick in the quarterfinals, the team saw their run come to an end against Braintree in the sectional semifinals. This year the boys look once again primed for another run towards a Herget title and a tournament appearance with key returners including sophomore goaltender Andrew Hubbard.

The girls meanwhile unfortunately saw their streak of 3 straight state final appearances come to an end last season, as despite capturing yet another Herget title with a 14-5-3 overall record, the team saw their postseason run come to an end sooner than they would’ve liked, as after a preliminary round victory over Stoneham the girls fell 2-1 in overtime to Westwood. This year’s team will see a lot of familiar faces returning who saw big impacts last season, and look for the Raiders to once again be right there atop the Bay State Conference. Tomorrow we will preview both the indoor track teams!

Basketball Previews

As we kick off our 2017-18 season previews today we take a look at the boys and girls basketball teams who as always will be striving high in the new season. The boys are coming off a season where they made the playoffs after a year’s absence, falling in the D1 South preliminary round to Marshfield. With a solid core returning from last year’s team the boys look to be once again in contention for certainly a tournament berth, if not a Herget division title.

The girls meanwhile are coming off another Herget title winning season as they finished last year 18-4 overall beating Marshfield in the D1 South quarters before falling to Mansfield in the sectional semifinals. Like their male counterparts this year’s team sees a solid core return and certainly will be one of the favorites in the Herget, and D1 South yet again this season. Check back in tomorrow as we preview boys and girls hockey.
