Wellesley Cheerleading Shines In Local Competition

The Wellesley High School cheerleading squad is doing big things to start off the winter season. Head coach Odessa Sanchez was kind of to pass along this recap of the teams latest competition plus where you may be able to watch the team in action this winter.

Members from the Wellesley Cheer Squad participated in a Student Body Hello Cheer & Dance Competition last night at Reggie Lewis Center in Boston. This was our second time entering as an extension to our Fall season, and an opportunity to collaborate with Schools from surrounding areas ( some of the communities our Metco Cheerleaders live in.) It is a great crossover experience for both Wellesley and Boston high school student bodies. Last year we came in 2nd in the Cheer category, and this year we are proud to take home the 1st place trophy for Dance Championship. The competition was held December 9th at Reggie Lewis Center. Seven schools participated and Wellesley Varsity Cheer sold 100 tickets to our fan base in Wellesley and in Boston. Many families and a few Wellesley Varsity football and Basketball players came to cheer us on! Because our Fall season is officially over, only ten of our 18 member squad was available to compete last night. I want to recognize those hard working cheer athletes because their resilience and passion are the reason for this win. Lead by team captains, Shyann Chalmus, Skye Sanchez, and Matayah Roderick, the competition squad consisted of these additional Cheerleaders; Petrina Ssempala, Rhianna Murray, Samone Lumley, Kaidyn Hart, Naimar Nunez, Karina Gomes, and James Ostler. Co -coached by Wellesley High alumni Jayla Glover, we are very excited to share this trophy with our Wellesley High Athletic Community! We may need a larger trophy case!

Raider Recap 12-8-18

The winter regular season officially began today, as both boys swimming and wrestling opened their seasons up on this cold Saturday. I have not yet been able to track down the full wrestling results from their quad meet but once I do I will add them to this post. Here’s how it all went down today!

Results for 12-8-18

Boys Swimming: Wellesley 97 Hopkinton 84

Wrestling: Triton 51 Wellesley 24, Wellesley 45 Essex 33, Belmont 39 Wellesley 36

Wrestling Preview

As we wrap up the week of winter sport previews, we take a look at wrestling. The wrestling team took a big step forward last season finishing the year 5-10-1, before competition in sectionals. The team also had several individual wrestlers who competed at the state meet. This year’s team will certainly look to build on the momentum that last years created, and it should be an exciting season on the mat for the Raider wrestlers!

Raider Friday Trivia

It’s another beautifully cold Friday and that means it’s time to warm things up a bit with another edition of Raider Friday Trivia. Today’s question is…How many consecutive games (including postseason) did girls hockey go unbeaten to end last season? Answer tomorrow!

Gymnastics And Boy’s Swimming Previews

On this second to last day of our winter sports previews we take a look at gymnastics and boys swimming who both are looking to build in 2018/19. Gymnastics finished last year 4-4 on the season and had multiple individuals make it to the state competition. The girls are always strong and competitive in league play, and I would expect this season to be no different.

Boy’s swimming also finished 500 last year going 6-6. The team then went on to finish 4th at Bay State’s and 10th at the state meet. This year’s team has a lot to build on and I fully expect them to be once again very competitive throughout this new season.

Tomorrow we will finish up the previews taking a look at wrestling!

Indoor Track Previews

As we reach the midway point of our week, and our winter sports previews. We take a look at both the boys and girls indoor track teams who come into 2018/19 looking to build on last seasons success. The boys finished last season 4-2 before finishing in 7th at the all state meet. Like their female counterparts the boys are always a contender at the top of both league and state meets and I would fully expect more of the same this year.

The girls meanwhile had certainly the banner worthy season a year ago as after finishing the season 7-0, they went on to capture both the Bay State and state title. The girls appear to be in prime position to defend those crowns this year and I would expect for them to be right up front yet again come the end of the season.

Stay tuned tomorrow as we’ll preview gymnastics and boy’s swimming!

Basketball Previews

On this second day of our winter sport previews we take a look at both the boys and girls basketball teams who are looking to both contend for tournament berths once again in 2018-19. The boys finished last year 14-7 falling in the first round of the tournament to BC High. Coach Mike Reidy always has his squad in contention in both league and sectional play and with a solid core returning that should once again be the case this season.

The girls meanwhile finished 16-6 overall last year, defeating Whitman-Hanson in the playoffs before falling to Mansfield in the south quarterfinals. The girls return the likes of Gianna Pali and Brooke Guiffre among others and with coach Glen Magpiong at the helm, you can rest assured this band of sisters will be right in the thick of things once again in 2018-19.

Stay tuned tomorrow as we take a look at both indoor track teams!

Hockey Preview

As we count down the days to the start of the winter sports regular season, it’s time to begin our week of previews and what better way to start than with boys and girls hockey, who both had tremendous even banner worthy seasons a year ago. The boys finished last season with an 16-3-2 overall mark, capturing another Herget title and defeated Framingham in the D1 South tournament before falling to Xaverian. The boys return several key pieces and should be a contender once again in both the conference and D1 South.

Now onto the girls, who had a season to remember last year, as the girls went 19-2-3 overall capturing a Herget title of their own. They then went on to defeat Winchester, Norwell, Algonquin, before defeating Canton at the Garden to capture the programs first state title since 2006. The girls also return several key pieces to last years title team and will certainly be one of the early favorites to defend both their league and state crown in 2018/19.

Stay tuned tomorrow as we will preview both boy’s and girl’s basketball!

Monday Poll

It’s the first Monday of December which means it’s a glorious time for another edition of Monday Poll. Last week’s question saw more than half the total votes (8/13) go to the Bruins for team that is playing best currently. This week’s question is… Who will win this year’s college football playoff, Alabama, Clemson, Notre Dame, or Oklahoma? Comment with your answers!
