Yesterday we took a look back at Wellesley’s road to the Garden, now it’s time to take a look at the team they will be playing the Cougars of Notre Dame Academy. Here’s a little of what you need to know about the Cougars heading into Sunday’s matchup.

Record: 18-4-2 (First Catholic Conference)

Goals Scored: 102

Goals Allowed: 43

How they got here:

Beat Mansfield/Oliver Ames 11-3 in D2 Preliminary Round

Beat Winchester 2-1 in D2 First Round

Beat Tewksbury/Methuen 8-2 in D2 Quarterfinals

Beat Matignon 9-3 in D2 Semifinals

Notes:

This will be the first ever trip for the Cougars to the TD Garden and despite their 9th seed in the tournament this team packs quite the punch offensively. The Cougars have not only scored over 100 goals up to this point but are averaging 7.5 goals per game in the tournament alone. This team certainly has depth as evidenced by the fact that one of their top scorers is only an 8th grader (Gabrielle Roy). Defensively the team has been lead in net by senior Caroline Bell.

The MIAA just released the game times for Sunday’s hockey state championship games and the Raider girls will take to the ice at 11 am for their D2 state title game vs. Notre Dame Academy. The weekly schedule has been updated.

So as we look towards Sunday’s state championship game, we first take a look back at your Wellesley Raider Girls Hockey team’s season that led to this third straight trip to the Garden. Here’s a little retrospective.

Record: 19-2-2 (First in BSC Herget)

Goals Scored: 96

How they got here:

Beat Leominster/St. Bernards 3-0 in D2 First Round

Beat Medway/Ashland 2-0 in D2 Quarterfinals

Beat Plymouth 3-2 in D2 Semifinals

Notes: This Raider team shook off a loss in their second game of the season vs. Needham and went on a 16 game unbeaten streak before going 0-1-1 in their final 2 games. That didn’t faze the Raiders though as they posted shutouts in their first two tournament games before a thrilling semifinal victory over Plymouth on Monday. The Raiders have been to the Garden the last two years and have been the bridesmaid but never the bride but will look to make that third times the charm on Sunday. Offensively the team was led all season by their  first line trio of senior captains Kiely Noonan, Carley Boyle, and Sophie Vernon. In goal the Raiders had the dynmaic duo of junior Alyssa Cimino and sophomore Caroline Bedrosian rotating throughout the season, both of whom consistently came up big when called upon.

As many of you know the Wellesley girls hockey team booked their third straight appearance at TD Garden last night with a 3-2 win over Plymouth. The team will take on Notre Dame Academy Sunday in the D2 state finals. Over the next couple of days I will be posting some previews of the game, tomorrow taking a look back at Wellesley’s season followed by Thursday taking a look at their opponents.

A third straight trip to TD Garden was on the line tonight for the Raider girls hockey team as they took on Plymouth in the state semifinals. Would the Raiders be victorious let’s find out!

We have come to the last week of the winter sports season, and there is still one Raider team very much alive and kicking as Girls Hockey is one win away from a third straight trip to TD Garden. It is time to answer this weeks Raider Friday Trivia question, although really this whole week has been one big Raider Friday Trivia. Anyway the answer to today’s question is… 2008. The Wellesley boys hockey team advanced all the way to the D1 South finals that year before falling to archrival Needham 3-0 in the championship game. By the way there will be a new Raider recap tomorrow night as the Raider girls hockey team takes on Medway/Ashland at 6 pm at Gallo Arena in Bourne in the D2 quarterfinals!
